Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is the most common solution to replace missing teeth. However, this does not mean it is the best.

Multiple Missing Teeth

In the past, patients with multiple missing teeth had to choose from partial dentures or a fixed bridge. However, modern dentistry has provided us with a new method to replace missing teeth: dental implants. Patients can now receive treatment that is free from the complications of past treatments. In fact, by choosing dental implants, patients can replace missing teeth with a treatment that will actively improve their oral health.

A dental bridge is the most common solution to replace missing teeth. However, this does not mean it is the best. A bridge can inflict damage on remaining natural teeth and actually cause further tooth loss. Also, with a dental bridge, the jawbone does not receive the stimulation that it would with dental implants. Patients will experience a gradual deterioration of the jawbone and soft tissue when using a dental bridge to replace missing teeth.

Removable dentures are another option to replace missing teeth. However, dentures can lead to similar complications. Over time, the gums on which they rest will begin to wear away and alter the fit of the dentures. This can result in some undesirable side effects such as slippage and an unattractive appearance. With dental implants, patients do not experience these issues. In fact, dental implants provide patients with a number of benefits over dentures. These include:

Titanium composition – Titanium does not irritate the gums and is resistant to decay, making dental implants a more comfortable, long-term option to replace missing teeth

Increased stability – Dental implants cannot be removed without additional surgery, eliminating any risk of slippage.

Long term results – With proper care, dental implants never need to be replaced. This makes them a long-term option to replace missing teeth.

Preservation of jawbone – Dental implants stimulate the jawbone to encourage growth and prevent deterioration.

While both dentures and fixed bridges can be used safely and effectively to replace missing teeth, dental implants are the most sustainable and hassle free. Once in place, they provide a natural appearance and function. It is not uncommon to replace missing teeth with dentures or a fixed bridge, in order to switch to dental implants. Most patients report an increased quality of life.
